Limits on nn̄ oscillations from nuclear stability

چکیده

The relationship between the lower limit on the nuclear stability lifetime as derived from the non disappearance of ‘stable‘ nuclei (Td ∼ 5.4 × 10 31 yr), and the lower limit thus implied on the oscillation time (τnn̄) of a possibly underlying neutron-antineutron oscillation process, is clarified by studying the time evolution of the nuclear decay within a simple model which respects unitarity. The order-of-magnitude result τnn̄ ≈ 2(Td/Γn̄) 1/2 > 2 × 108 sec, where Γn̄ is a typical n̄ nuclear annihilation width, agrees as expected with the limit on τnn̄ established by several detailed nuclear physics calculations, but sharply disagreeing by 15 orders of magnitude with a claim published recently in Phys. Rev. CRAP. PACS: 11.30.Fs, 13.75.Cs

CALT 68-2898 Simplified models with baryon number violation but no proton decay

We enumerate the simplest models that have baryon number violation at the classical level but do not give rise to proton decay. These models have scalar fields in two representations of SU(3)× SU(2)×U(1) and violate baryon number by two units. Some of the models give rise to nn̄ (neutron-antineutron) oscillations, while some also violate lepton number by two units. We discuss the range of scalar...

On Baryogenesis and nn̄-Oscillations

We study a simple model where color sextet scalars violate baryon number at tree level but do not give rise to proton decay. In particular, we include one light and two heavy sextets with ∆B = 2 baryon number violating interactions that induce neutron anti-neutron oscillations. This setup also suggests an intimate connection to the generation of the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe via...

Limits on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time from the stability of nuclei.

We refute a recent claim by Nazaruk that the limits placed on the free– space neutron–antineutron oscillation time τnn̄ can be improved by many orders of magnitude with respect to the estimate τnn̄ > 2(T0/Γ) 1/2, where T0 is a measured limit on the annihilation lifetime of a nucleus and Γ ∼ 100 MeV is a typical antineutron–nucleus annihilation width. In a recent letter [1], Nazaruk claims to have...

Medium Modifications to the ω - Meson Mass in the Walecka Model

We calculate the effective mass of the ω meson in nuclear matter in a relativistic random-phase approximation to the Walecka model. The dressing of the meson propagator is driven by its coupling to particle-hole pairs and nucleon-antinucleon (NN̄) excitations. We report a reduction in the ω-meson mass of about 170 MeV at nuclear-matter saturation density. This reduction arises from a competition...

Design Supplementary Controller Based on Stabilizing Effect of Delay for Damping Inter Area Oscillations in a Power System

The delay associated with signal transmission through the wide-area measurement system reduces the functionality of the power oscillation damping control system. One of the important issues is the poor operation of the supplementary controller against delay existence, which limits the efficiency of damping of ancillary equipment, such as SVCs in a power system. This paper as a solution proposes...
